Card Skimming & Shimming

Card skimming occurs when criminals install hidden devices on ATMs, gas pumps, or payment terminals to steal card information. Shimming is a newer version of this fraud that targets chip-enabled cards, inserting a tiny device inside the card reader to capture data.

Warning Signs:
  • An unusual-looking card reader or one that is loose or wobbly.
  • Your card takes longer than usual to process at an ATM or gas pump.
  • Unauthorized transactions appear on your statement, even though your card is still in your possession.

How to Stay Safe:
  • Inspect ATMs and card readers before inserting your card—if something looks off, don’t use it.
  • Use contactless payment or mobile wallets when possible to avoid inserting your card.
  • Monitor your bank statements and set up account alerts to detect suspicious activity.
