Common Scams & How to Avoid Them
Impersonation Scams (Government, Bank, or Business Scams)
Fraudsters pose as representatives from the IRS, Social Security Administration, a bank, or even utility companies, demanding immediate payment or personal information.
Warning Signs:
- Calls, emails, or texts claiming your Social Security number has been “suspended” or that you owe back taxes.
- Someone claiming to be from Fahey Bank asks for your account number or login credentials (we will never do this).
- Threats of arrest or legal action if payment isn’t made immediately.
- How to Stay Safe:
- Never provide personal or banking information over the phone or email unless you are certain of the recipient’s identity.
- Verify the caller’s identity by hanging up and calling the official number of the agency or business.
- Be cautious of urgent or threatening language—government agencies and banks don’t demand immediate payment over the phone.
