Common Scams & How to Avoid Them

Tech Support & Computer Scams

You receive an unexpected phone call or pop-up warning saying your computer is infected with a virus, and you must call a “support” number. The scammer then demands remote access to your computer or payment for fake security services.

Warning Signs:
  • A pop-up alert tells you to call a number to fix your computer.
  • A caller claims they are from Microsoft, Apple, or your internet provider, saying your computer is compromised.
  • You’re asked to provide remote access to your device or make an immediate payment.

How to Stay Safe:
  • Do not call numbers from pop-up messages—legitimate tech companies don’t operate this way.
  • Never allow remote access to your computer unless you initiated contact with a trusted IT professional.
  • Keep your software and antivirus programs up to date to prevent real malware attacks.
